Can You Sew Like a Pro?

Views

Industrial sewing is something that we know quite a lot about here at Stocks Sewing Machines, and we’ve previously highlighted our expertise by divulging some industry facts and tips that you may not have known about this type of sewing.

Although industrial sewing is generally of a more professional quality and on a grander scale than what people who sew as a hobby can achieve, there are ways in which you can still sew like a pro, whether you’ve got an industrial machine or not!

What we want to know is – are you sewing like a pro?

Are You Matching Your Thread?

Depending on the project you are working on, it can often be important – if not essential – that you are able to match the thread colour to the fabric that you are working with.

Although some projects may require you to use a different colour to make the stitching stand out, it generally looks more professional and neat if you can match the colour of the thread that you are using to the main colour of the fabric.

Aside from looking neat, you will be able to get away with slightly crooked stitching if you can’t really see the threat more than if you were using a darker or lighter thread – not that you should be aiming to stitch crooked in the first place, though!

Pressing Fabric Is Essential

Before doing anything with your fabric, make sure you press it with an iron to make it completely flat. Iron out any lumps, bumps and folds you may find and we guarantee you’ll find it much easier to work with.

This is especially advised if you are working with a fabric which has a pattern on it that you want to remain consistent throughout your project. Failing to press your fabric in this case could lead to odd or inconsistent patterns, so make sure everything is poker straight before you start cutting and sewing.

Don’t Use Pins

We’ve mentioned this in our industry tips blog, but using pins can more often than not cause more issues than help you.

Not only is there a chance that the material could snag on the needle and ruin the look of it, it’s often hard to judge if fabric is straight enough while it is pinned. This is because the pins will cause the material to pucker and won’t lie completely flat – no matter how unbent the pins are.

Instead, keep the material flat using weights and apply tension to the material as you pass it through the machine to keep it tight.

Here at Stocks Sewing, we believe that anyone can create a fantastic sewing project, no matter what their skill level is. We do specialise in supplying individuals and companies with an industry standard brother embroidery machine, but we also realise that all sewing professionals have to start somewhere!
