Industrial vs. Domestic

Views

Whether you’re a sewing fanatic or you’re starting your own sewing-related business, you’ll want a machine that will last! When purchasing a machine, we’re sure you’ll have plenty of questions regarding which machine is right for you. What brand? What type? What facilities do you need? The biggest thing you’re probably wondering is whether you should purchase a domestic or an industrial machine and what are the benefits of both. Therefore, to help you in your choice - here are a few key differences between industrial and domestic sewing machines models.

User Type Industrial – Ideal for individuals who use their sewing machine for 5 or more hours per day. Industrial machines are designed and engineered to be a heavier load machine. Domestic – Domestic machines are generally designed for individuals who use their machine for less than 5 hours a day. If used for longer, the motor may get extremely hot, wear out and become overheated. Production Speed Industrial – Industrial machines are built to produce at a fast pace, allowing users to work at the speed they’re comfortable with. Domestic – Domestic machines are suited to those who work at a slower or less-deadline orientated speed. Stitch Options Industrial – Industrial machines offer one stitch option per machine, which means the quality of stitch is higher and both machine and stitch are less likely to wear out. Domestic – A domestic machine comes with various stitch options, meaning the more stitches you use, the more wear and tear your machine will suffer. Stitch Quality Industrial – Creates a clean, neat and better-looking professional stitch.

Domestic – Stitch often requires a little more fussing to get it perfect. Fabric Flexibility Industrial – Allows more space to work with larger, thicker and heavier fabrics. Domestic –Due to a smaller motor, domestic machines are generally less robust and don’t allow for larger and thicker fabrics to be worked easily. Maintenance Industrial – Most industrial models are maintenance-free and come with a built-in oil system. Parts are also easy to find and replace.

Domestic – Most domestic models require constant oiling and cleaning of parts to continue to work in a productive and quality manner. Parts can also be trickier to find and replace. Investment Quality Industrial – Industrials are generally a reliable and long-term investment. As they’re designed and engineered to last, they provide a quality and long-lasting product that offers satisfaction and enjoyment for many years.

Domestic – Due to their design being suited to individuals who sew on a more casual basis, they can often cost more in the long-run due to parts seizing up or becoming unusable. Although they’re often cheaper to buy initially and may be visually more appealing, they are much harder to maintain the original quality and don’t offer the long-lasting life of an industrial machine.
