Importance of Choosing the Right Materials in Summer

Views

We are now in the height of summer - the time where people are going out, having barbeques, going to the beach and wearing their best Hawaiian outfit. So when it comes to making clothes for the summer period, it is important to carefully choose the right materials. Bear in mind what the customers will be looking for and also remember, if you are working with heavy materials in the hot summer months, it can be uncomfortable for you too.

Choose Materials That Are Light

When choosing the right materials in summer, one of the most important factors is that they need to be light. If a material is light, it tends to dry faster than a heavy material. Heavy clothes, like bulky jackets and other thick clothing, tend to cling to the skin and trap heat and sweat, which isn’t good in the summer months. Lightweight clothes eliminate these factors, so materials like cotton and linen are best suited for summer clothing.

Choose Materials That Are Breathable

In the summer, there are days where it is particularly humid outside. When combined with high temperatures, it can make life very uncomfortable. In order to stay cool, the body radiates heat away from the body, so it is important to allow air circulation to maintain a cool body temperature. If you make summer clothes that don’t allow air circulation, it can lead to unpleasant odours and bad hygiene.

So, using materials that are breathable is another important factor for summer clothing. Great examples of breathable materials include natural fibres like cotton and linen, as they are better at absorbing moisture and allowing it to evaporate. Synthetic fibres are bad choices as they tend to be water-resistant, so they don’t absorb body moisture, leading to body odour.

Choose Materials That Are Light in Colour and Offer Sun Protection

When choosing materials for summer, you’ll find clothes that are light in colour are more popular than darker colours. Clothes that are dark in colour absorb more heat compared to clothes that are light in colour. So dark shirts retain more heat than light shirts which, in the summer heat, is a bad thing! So white or pastel clothing is a better alternative to navy blue or black clothing.

Another thing that needs to be taken into account is the sun’s UV radiation. Since UV light has been associated with premature aging of the skin and even skin cancer, it is important to provide your customers with as much protection from the sun as possible. Long-sleeve shirts are a great way to get some protection and, if it is light and breathable, they’ll be incredibly cool as well.

While it is very important to choose the right materials for the summer, it is just as important to choose the right type of sewing machine. Some machines are designed for small-scale projects, others for an industrial scale, whilst others are designed for very specific applications. Because of this, we provide an array of industrial sewing machines that can be used for any type of clothing project that you may have.

If you’d like to know more about the machines that we offer, then please get in touch! Give us a call on 0113 242 9378 and we will be more than happy to discuss any queries you may have.
