What Fabrics Should You be Using for your Winter Clothes?

Winter is drawing ever closer and we’re willing to bet that many of our readers are well underway with their winter sewing projects.

However if you haven’t got a head start on creating your winter clothing yet and are still wondering what you should make, we’ve put together a short guide on how to find the fabrics which are perfect for the winter season.

How Warm Is the Fabric?

Warmth is definitely one of the main aspects you should be looking for in fabric for wither garments. Adding extra layers to what you are already working isn’t always appropriate, especially when you add so many that you can’t move properly.

Try to stick with traditional fabrics such as cotton and wool to ensure that you are getting the best heat retention in your clothing. In fact, the US Government has reported on some of the best materials for building insulation, and cotton and wool are on that list!

Surely if they are suitable insulation materials for buildings then they are more than capable of keeping our bodies warm when used in clothing!

What Materials Should I Be Looking at?

Taking into account what we have just mentioned about warmth, what materials should we be using for winter clothing? Not only do we need to be comfortably warm, but we also want to look stylish at the same time!

Wool

We’ve already mentioned wool, but why is this material a good choice for winter clothing other than the fact that it is a great insulator?

The great thing about modern wool is that it is available in a variety of different weights, allowing people who warm up faster to still benefit from the insulating properties that wool has without overheating and can be used to make a selection of garments such as hats, scarves and jumpers.

Cotton

There are many different cotton fabrics available. Cotton is a soft, breathable material which is also incredibly absorbent which makes it great for soaking up any excess moisture from your skin which can make you feel even colder in the winter months.

Some examples of cotton fabric are:

- Denim
- Terrycloth (for towels and bathrobes)
- Cambric

 Polar Fleece

Polar fleece is an incredibly soft polyester fabric which is used in jackets, jumpers, sweatpants, gym clothes and hoodies as an insulator.

It is a great alternative to wool for people who would prefer not to wear animal by-products such as wool.

It is also very easy to sew with so makes for a great starting point for people who may not be familiar with sewing with new materials.
